Why It’s So Difficult To Be An Alberta Gardener

A picture is worth a thousand words, so let me just say this:

April 12, 2008

+24° Celsius. (75° F.)

Beautiful warm day - April 12

April 21, 2008

-11° Celsius (12° F)

Miserable Cold Day - April 21

And that is why it is so hard to be an Alberta Gardener!

Oh my, that really is terrible! We’ve had pretty cold temps and it snowed all afternoon here, but not much of it stuck around. You folks in Alberta have really been hit hard this week.

Yay, Alberta. Maybe we’ll be lucky and Ma Nature will skip the traditional May snowstorm this year (touch wood)

If we don’t get the frost it’ll be hail ripping our tomatoes to shreds and snow laying our cherry bushes on the ground. That was last year for myself in Calgary. 75% of the blossoms were killed by one or the other but we still managed to have 5 cherry pies by the end of the year. Not so bad I guess.

Apparently, its easier north of the city, because we are at higher alttitude here (Calgary). Nights are warmer north, better for the tomatoes. However, its still not as easy as gardening in Montreal! That’s why I now have a “rectangle house”, my simple hoop house. Hope to have a greenhouse one day!
